When I first laid my eyes on the Cyclonus portable speakers I wasn't expecting much from these puny looking audio peripherals. Boy, was I wrong!

The Cyclonus comes in two versions: the Mini and the StereoPod.

The Cyclonus Mini is a single speaker which measures 5cm(L) x 3.5cm(H) and weighs 56g. It looks like a little ball cut in half. You twist the bottom and the top pops up, extending it by about 1cm to reveal the on/off button, volume control, USB port and audio input. Amazing to think all these fit in such a tiny gadget.

What's even more amazing is the sound. With an output of 1.7W, the speaker produces a crisp, clear and pretty powerful output. I hooked it up to my iPod nano and was astounded by the sound and volume!

The speaker has a built-in lithium-ion battery which is rechargeable via USB. Very convenient because you don't have to worry about buying new batteries or having to connect it to a power adaptor.

The Cyclonus Mini is ideal for the iPod family. It's small, light and powerful and easy to carry around. It even comes with its own little pouch.

I did try it with the iPhone but because the iPhone's speaker is already quite powerful, the Cyclonus Mini's only benefit was to provide a slightly fuller sound.

Now, if you want stereo output you'll want the Cyclonus StereoPod. This set of two speakers are very similar to the Mini in shape and functionality. The difference is they come attached to each other by magnets at the bottom. You simply pull them apart, twist the bottoms and connect them with the supplied cables. Each of the speakers measures 5cm(L) x 4cm(H) which is just slightly larger than the Mini.

Where the Cyclonus Mini would be ideal for small gadgets like iPods, the StereoPod is perfect for laptops. I connected the speakers to my MacBook Pro and the sound was loud and totally enhanced. It was cleaner and brighter with well-balanced bass and treble. I'll definitely be carrying these speakers along wherever I take my MacBook Pro. They would come in very handy for multimedia presentations or watching movies on-the-go.
